As per Maslow's hierarchy of needs, safety is the second most basic need of humans. For school, secure facility construction and high awareness of safety are important.
Last month, safety awareness was promoted at Yew Wah International School of Rizhao. In order to provide a safer environment for students, some staff attended safety seminars to enhance their knowledge and safety plans to protect students from danger. For the same purpose, fire drill and anti-invasion drill were also conducted.
The students and teachers were not aware that a fire drill had been planned. To fake a fire, a smoke canister was placed near the office side stairway on the ground. Thick smoke spread through the hallway and the fire alarm rang.
Co-ordination between teachers ensured that all students were evacuated from the YWIS building to a safe area at the back of the kitchen.
At the “assembly point”, a roll call was conducted to make sure that all students and staff were present and accounted for. The evacuation took only three minutes! Future fire drills will be conducted throughout the 2nd semester.
On a Wednesday morning, students were having classes in their classrooms as usual, when terrorist alarm rang in the campus. Staff of school office shut down all the entrance, and broadcast the information of invasion and taking refuge.
Outside the building, the “terrorist” acted by our staff was under the control of security guards. The terrorist alarm was switched off, and staff of school office broadcast an all-clear message. Students went back to their seats in the classroom one after one.
Fire Prevention Seminar
A consultant from the local fire station introduced staff to information about areas that may have potential for fire, how to use a fire extinguisher and evacuation procedures.
At YWIS Rizhao, staff have a responsibility to protect students. If a threatening person enters the school grounds with the intent to harm students or staff, it is necessary to have procedures in place.
Police representatives gave staff an introductory seminar on aggressive intruders and demonstrated the use of anti-riot weapons.
