Upper Primary students have been studying the famous scenic spots and geography of their local environment Rizhao. On November 17, 2016, students and teachers of Yew Wah International School of Rizhao visited Ju County.
Firstly, they visited the museum and walked around some specific exhibits to view over 5000 years of the history of civilisation. The students were amazed at the contributions of Ju County to China. They were instructed to take particular notice of the content of the exhibits in preparation for an answer/question time in class and to complete worksheets.
Secondly, the Upper Primary students climbed Fulai Mountain and saw the reputed over-3000–year-old Ginkgo tree in Dinglin Temple. This is where Liu Xie, China’s famous literary writer, wrote The Literary Heart and the Carving of Dragons. At this time of the year, the magnificent tree had a huge trunk with a golden yellow crown of leaves. At least eight adults could surround the trunks with their arms outstretched. The students also enjoyed collecting and examining the beautiful autumn coloured leaves on the ground. They will press them and make leaf bookmarks that will be a wonderful reminder to them of their excursion.
Ju County was a combination of a spiritual and cultural journey for the Upper Primary students. We hope to have another trip in summer for them to explore and further familiarise themselves with the 5,000 years of culture and achievements of the Chinese civilisation.
